About the Class

This workshop introduces beginners to two basic techniques of machine appliqué - raw edge applique (pear) and reverse applique (strawberry). The two blocks thus created will be ready to be set in a pair of placemats measuring 17"x12".

Requirements

Generic

  1. Sewing machine with free motion quilting and zig zag stitch capability.

  2. Rotary cutter, Quilting ruler, Cutting mat.

  3. Pins, Fabric and Paper Scissors, Iron, Ironing board.

  4. Silicone / Non-stick ironing sheet.

  5. Stork scissors or similar small, sharp pair.

  6. Batting and fabric for backing & binding

Specific

  1. Pattern printed and traced as per instructions

  2. Light fusible web and Parchment paper - A4 size

  3. Fabric stabiliser/interfacing - 8”x8”

  4. For the Pear: Background fabric – 7.5”x7.5”;Fabrics in 3 different values of pear colour, leaf green, brown – 8”x8”

  5. For the Strawberry: Background fabric - 8”x8”; Fabrics in strawberry red and two greens - 8”x8”

  6. For the Table Mats:

Choose 4 coordinating colours and cut:

5”x7.5” – 1piece each

5.5”x7.5” – 2 pieces each

10.25”x5” – 1piece each

About the Tutor
Introduction to raw edge and reverse applique techniques

Shyamala Rao’s quilting journey started 20 years ago in Kuwait where she found herself deeply involved with KTAA (Kuwait Textile and Arts Association). A multiple award-winning quilter, she has not only participated in, but also helped organize various quilt events. Her quilts have been exhibited in prestigious juried shows like IQF Houston, the Festival Of Quilts, Birmingham, International Quilt Show Dubai and IQF India Chennai, to name a few.
Shyamala, a keen blogger (http://banyantreequilts.wordpress.com), has also conducted workshops and lectures on several quilting techniques. She enjoys the quilting journey as much as reaching the destination. “A smile on the lips and quilt on the lap” is her workshop motto.
