About the Class
Learn to make original quilts from travel memories based on photographs . In this class, you will be creating an art quilt from a photo image of river Ganges as she begins her 2510 km journey from Gangotri and through the Himalayan Mountain Range . Techniques: Fusible web and Freezer paper appliqué , free-motion embroidery , thread painting , machine quilting
Requirements
Generic
Sewing machine with free motion quilting and zig zag stitch capability.
Rotary cutter, Quilting ruler, Cutting mat.
Pins, Fabric and Paper Scissors, Iron, Ironing board.
Silicone / Non-stick ironing sheet.
Stork scissors or similar small, sharp pair.
Specific
Downloaded and printed pattern sheet
Border fabric of your choice - 2.5” strips
Paper backed light fusible web - 1 yard
Freezer Paper and Parchment Paper - A4 size
Tight cotton or felt batting – 12”x15”
Fabric for backing and binding
Cardboard template of 10”x13” with a 6”x9” rectangle removed in the middle to make a window frame
Cotton fabric pieces (fat-eighths) as per the colour chart:
water -0
light blue or light grey-1
Medium grey-2
Medium Green-3
Lighter green-4
Dark green-5

About the Tutor
Shyamala Rao’s quilting journey started 20 years ago in Kuwait where she found herself deeply involved with KTAA (Kuwait Textile and Arts Association). A multiple award-winning quilter, she has not only participated in, but also helped organize various quilt events. Her quilts have been exhibited in prestigious juried shows like IQF Houston, the Festival Of Quilts, Birmingham, International Quilt Show Dubai and IQF India Chennai, to name a few.
Shyamala, a keen blogger (http://banyantreequilts.wordpress.com), has also conducted workshops and lectures on several quilting techniques. She enjoys the quilting journey as much as reaching the destination. “A smile on the lips and quilt on the lap” is her workshop motto.
